From January 2018, Satoshilabs has started accepting the pre-orders for its new hardware wallet named "Trezor Model T". You might have already known about Trezor One, the first ever cryptocurrency wallet developed by the same manufacturer. How does Trezor Model T differ from its predecessor? Does the model T offer any significant benefits than Trezor? Let's take a detailed look.
What's in the package?
Like its predecessor, Trezor Model T is also shipped with a tamper protection seal. Besides the device, you will find USB cable, instruction manual, two recovery seed cards and a magnetic dock. You can attach your device to the dock using its 3M double-sided tape. ( The dock is available only for model T and not for the Trezor One).
Unlike the previous versions of the Trezor hardware wallet, the model T is built using an RGB touch screen by wiping out the buttons completely. So, you don't need to press the buttons anymore. Just a gentle touch will help you to make your cryptocurrency transactions easily.
SatoshiLabs has introduced an innovative security feature in this model T. When you connect the USB-C port of the device to the USB port of your computer, the communication will not be established until you enter the correct PIN on your device. Only the power will be taken from your computer till the connection is authenticated. Simply, the USB communication will be dumb till you enter the correct PIN.
12-word recovery seed
Like Trezor One, the model T device will also prompt you to make a note of the recovery seed during its initial setup. But the length of the recovery seed is only 12 words when compared with the 24-word seed for Trezor One. SatoshiLabs has mentioned in its blog that a 12-word seed should be enough for the security of the private keys. Because most of the sensitive operations of the device can be done using the touchscreen itself. Once you finish noting down the recovery seeds, the screen prompts you to enter the two random words as shown on the screen. This is considered as an additional security measure. If you wrongly type the words, then the screen will show the full set of 12 words again.
Note: Don't store your recovery seed on a USB drive, mobile phone, laptop or any electronic device even if it is fully secured and encrypted.
Naming your device
During the initial setup, you will be given the option of choosing a name for your Trezor Model T hardware wallet. If you have more than one Trezor device, then it is better to name your device to avoid confusion.
Supports up to 8 cryptocurrencies
Currently, the Trezor Model T wallet can support up to 8 major cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin, Litecoin, Dash, Ethereum and more. SatoshiLabs has announced that it will be adding support for more cryptocurrency coins in the near future. Besides the features listed above, the other functionalities of the Trezor Model T are the same as its predecessor Trezor One.
